Chapters 8 and 9 How did scout end up with a blanket across her shoulders? Why would Harper Lee include this moment in the book

During the fire Jem and Scout had to wait in the cold while waiting there scout becomes extremely cold until Boo sneaks out of the house and gives her a blanket without her knowledge. Harper Lee included this scene because throughout the book we hear of terrible rumors about Boo being a monster. The only person who believes that he is a real person and not a monster is Atticus. With this scene we learn that Boo is a warm hearted individual. He takes the few moments he could to get out of the house and help comfort a child that has been harassing him during the summer. "I'm going to tell you something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man" (Lee p.65). This is the only time we have seen Boo and rumors of him have left a bad impression, but due to this seen we have a more positive outlook on him as a person. Will we see Boo as a good guy throughout the rest of the book or was this simply a fluke.

  1. I think that Boo Radley is actually a kind person, but is just being stifled by his brother Nathan. When Jem and Atticus are talking about Boo, Atticus says, "Someday, maybe, Scout can thank [Boo] for covering her up" (Lee 96). Atticus suggests that Boo covered Scout up from the kindness in his heart, and not just because he wanted to scare the children or hurt them. Atticus has shown that he knows Boo better than many Maycomb residents, and he would know if Boo was a mean or Kind person.

  2. Boo Radley is portrayed in the book as a crazy and bad man, but he could be an actually kind and good person. "...You were so busy looking at the fire you didn't know it when he (Boo Radley) put the blanket around you.. my stomach turned to water and I nearly threw up" (Lee 96). Obviously, from all the rumors and stories Scout and Jem have twisted images of Boo Radley in their minds. Although Scout and Jem have heard rumors of Boo Radley being scary and bad, they don't truly know him so he could be portrayed in the book as a kind person further on in the book.

  4. I believe before this moment Arthur Boo Radley is not a monster in the readers eyes."I heard another sound, someone inside the house was laughing (Lee 54) After Jem rolled into the front steps of the Radley's house, the reader could assume Boo Radley is a psycho, laughing crazily from the window, or that he enjoys seeing children having fun because he has been cooped up in his house all these years. I believe, through confirmation of Boo putting the blanket on Scout while she was asleep (Lee 96), that Arthur Boo Radley is a genuinely kind man. Not remotely near what the rumors portray him to be.
